Khatte Moong. khatta moong is a quick and easy Gujarati sabzi recipe. It is super easy to make and is made with minimum and the most basic ingredients. Each ingredient used in the recipe is used in Indian houses on a regular basis such as moong sprouts, sour cuds, besan, ginger green chilli pasta and spices.
This is staple recipe in every Guajarati house hold, but everybody's version of khatta moong is different. This is how my family makes it and we enjoy it with plain rice or sometimes with Jeera rice. Ingredients of Khatte Moong
- It's 2 tbsp of green whole moong.
- You need 2 tbsp of sour curd.
- It's 1 tsp of besan.
- Prepare to taste of Salt.
- You need 1/4 tsp of Turmeric powder.
- It's 1/2 tsp of dhania jeera powder.
- It's 1/2 tsp of garam masala.
- It's 2 of lonavala kokam(or 1 tbsp tamarind pulp).

It is basically a sour curry where moong/whole green gram is cooked in curd/yogurt gravy. You can serve it with parathas or steamed rice. This recipe uses basic spices like hing, jeera powder and turmeric powder. This is a signature Gujarati lentil dish, unique in character as the moong dal is simmered in a mix of curd and spices.
Khatte Moong instructions
- Take two tbsp moong in a vessel,Wash it,Soak in water for 4 hrs.Pressure Cook it by 4-5 whistles..
- In a small bowl take 2 tbsp sour (khatta) curd,add 2 tbsp water,add 1 tsp besan and with a whisker Whisk it until smooth mixture is formed.Take out Boiled Moong from cooker,Heat on slow flame.Add curd besan mixture to it.Mix well..
- In a Plate, mix salt,Turmeric powder,garam masala and dhania jeera powder.Add this masala mixture to moong.Mix it.Also add lonavala kokam which adds extra sourness to Moong.Let it Boil on low flame for 3-4 min.if needed add little water..
- To prepare tempering,Heat oil,add mustard seeds,let it splutter,add Cumin seeds,hing and curry leaves.off the flame.Now add red chilli Powder.Add this to cooked moong.Mix it.Gives nice colour.Serve ina bowl..
- Garnish with coriander leaves and Serve hot with hot Plain rice..
